Henri Matisse
Henri Matisse (1869 – 1954) was a French artist, known for his use of color and his fluid, brilliant and original draughtsmanship. He was a master draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but excelled primarily as a painter. Matisse is regarded, with Picasso, as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.
Poesies Antillaises is book written by John-Antoine Nau and illustrated by Matisse. It was a book conceived of by Matisse to pay homage to his poet friend Nau. The book was published by Mourlot Freres, Paris in 1945. Matisse chose poems by Nau written about the natural beauty of Les Antillaises. He paired the poems with drawings of exotic models Matisse was working with at the time in Paris. Aube
Antillaise, 1972, Sur L’Arc
Vert, 1972, Iles, 1972 and Nouvelle Terve, 1972, are selected lithographs from
the book.
