Mann, Katherine

Katherine Mann is a painter living and working in Washington, DC. She received her MFA in 2009 from the Hoffberger School of Paintings at the Maryland Institute College of Art. In 2010 she received 2nd place in the Bethesda Painting Awards, and in 2009 was a semi-finalist for the Sondheim Prize. Mann's paintings use organic and decorative forms, which merge together to create a controlled chaos that threaten to spill off the edge of the paper. They are created through a process that begins with staining the paper, causing an organic form to emerge. Using that form as a stepping off point, Mann applies intricately combined decorative elements. Flowers, braids and latticework, are all found mixed up with biomorphic forms resulting in highly dynamic paintings.
